“The Night Circus” by Erin Morgenstern
This displayed the aughor’s imaginations as she wove chapter after chapter of fanciful, magical events utilizing characters that could have graduated from hogwarts. However, therein lays the problem: it was chapter after chapter after chapter, seemingly without end and without connecting the dots creating a interesting story, or even a plot. It began with promise, much like “Stardust” by Neil Gaiman, but fizzled with never ending repetition. I enjoyed the lengthy tomes by J.K. Rowling because each of the Potter stories kept you on the edge of your seat and the magic had purpose, and the characters had depth. Sadly, I got as far as page 204 out of the 387, and I left the story wothout wondering what happened because I simply didn’t care.

“Start Shooting”, by Charlie Newton
This is his second novel, set in the gritty underbelly of Chicago’s ghetto where the not-s0-nice police are both under gunned and over manned by the twenty characters that are both diverse and believable, and has enough excitement and twists to keep any readers interest. The writing is tight, the scenes gripping, and the plot is simple but powerful. This book is comfortably above the standard run-of-the-mill mystery that seems to dominate the market these days. It’s a winner!

“White Heat” by M.J. McGrath
This is an enjoyable mystery set in an avenue few of can imagine, Ellesmere Island, just a bit west of Greenland, home to the inuit people who eke out a living in this barren, inhospitable land three thousand kilometers north of Hudson Bay. Edie Kiglatuk is the best local guide, who often refuses to do what is politically correct, instead of trying to do the right thing even if she pays the price for it. When those around her are dying suspicious deaths that the elders are deeming accidents, she takes matters in her own hands, to the dismay of the local constabularies, and the elders. The plot is interesting, there are unanticipated surprises, and the opportunity to learn intimate details about another, largely unknown culture, make this an enjoyable read.

“Adrenaline” by Jeff Abbot
This was a really terrific book! Very well written, Abbott can turn a neat phrase and make a sentence interesting. The plot is clever and the finale is not readily visible when reading the book. It is action-packed, and will hold the reader’s attention throughout.
